There are several different methods for revealing a latent print the choice depends on the surface that is to be examined. Prints on hard and nonabsorbent surfaces (e.g. a mirror, tile, glass, and painted wood) are developed with the application of powder such as carbon, graphite, or talcum powder. Soft and porous surfaces (e.g. cloth, paper, and cardboard) containing prints are treated with a chemical to make the prints visible. On any hard surface, fingerprints can be developed by use of a colored or white powder. Such powders should be selected when a surface is smooth.
